Lenah Run School Site Discussed
The Board of Supervisors held a public hearing tonight (Tuesday, October 14th) on the School Board's Special Exception request for the Lenah Run property. Over sixty speakers spoke in favor of or against building the next middle and high school in the Dulles District on the Lenah property. I was speaker 64. I support the special exception because 1. It is the only viable site that the schools can be opened on time. 2. It is in compliance with the County's General Plan and supported by the County Staff. 3. It is the only viable site that is centrally located to the catchment areas for students in the Dulles and Blue Ridge District. 4. The cost is 20% less than the amount appropriated. 5. If the special exception isn't approved, we'll have to overflow students to schools in the Ashburn area until an acceptable site can be approved and the schools built, a potential delay of three or more years! I concluded my remarks by paraphrasing the late Art Buchwald: Whether it's the best of times or the worst of times, this is ours student's, our children’s only learning time; and the school board and the board of supervisors must ensure they receive a quality education. The Board of Supervisors will hopefully vote on the Lenah Run issue at their next business meeting on October 21st.
Supervisor Stevens Miller is hosting a community meeting concerning Dulles South School sites on Thursday, October 16, 2008 from 7:00PM - 9:30PM at Mercer Middle School's Auditorium. I urge everyone who will be effected by the Lenah schools to attend and let your concerns be heard. I can't attend because I will be at the Minority Student Achievement Advisory Committee, but Mr. DuPree will attend.
