I read that the Town of Purcellville is very excited about a new 1,000-seat football stadium that will be coming to Fields Farm. I too am excited about this as my son went through the football program for four years at Loudoun Valley High School. I also have children who went through the soccer, basketball and track programs.
However, I am extremely dismayed that the Town of Purcellville seems to have the opposite feelings about skateboarding in the town (or rather a lack of a place to skateboard). What gives? Are these kids nothing but outcasts who should not have a place to skate.
I do not know a whole lot about skateboarding. It’s been about 40 years since I was on a skateboard. But I do know that it is a sport. It is healthy. It keeps the kids active and is very social. Yes, I know that the kids ride on the sidewalks and some people don’t like this, but where else can they go? Did you know that the kids can’t even skate on the school grounds? Interesting, since other sports are played there.
Why can’t the town provide a place for this sport. We do it for all the other sports. I had a town police officer visit me the other day to advise that kids were skateboarding on my property and did some damage. My wife explained to the officer that yes there was damage done, and guess what? The kids responsible fixed the damage on their own. The officer explained that the town had talked about some sort of skateboard facility at Fireman’s Field.
Evidently this officer and the chief went to meetings with the town about a skate park and nothing has happened. I had also heard rumors about a skate park at the new fire and rescue facility.
Come on Town of Purcellville! Get with the program on this. This is not just about the kids today. This is about the kids tomorrow and the next day and the day after that.
