Dems endorse Flannery for commonwealth's attorney

The Loudoun County Democratic Committee decided at its Oct. 24 meeting to endorse the write-in campaign of John Flannery for commonwealth's attorney, Vice Chairman Tim Buchholz said.

Stevens Miller, who is the Democratic candidate for the Dulles District Board of Supervisors seat, made the motion to support Flannery's candidacy at the committee's regular monthly meeting. The motion passed unanimously.

Flannery launched the write-in campaign Oct. 22 to try and unseat incumbent Jim Plowman (R), who had been running unopposed.

Flannery said he is running because he is concerned with the way Plowman handled the perjury case against former Virginia senatorial candidate Mark Tate.

The charges against Tate were dropped last week by the special prosecutor. Plowman recused himself from the case in April because he had openly supported Tate's opponent Jill Holtzman Vogel. Tate was indicted in May, three weeks before his showdown with Vogel for the Republican nomination.

In August, a reporter filed an affidavit on Tate's behalf saying that Plowman had leaked information to him before the indictment was handed down.

"I am entering this race because of the ongoing unethical actions of our current commonwealth attorney," Flannery said. "It has now become crystal clear to me that he would rather help a political crony win a primary campaign by prosecuting her opponent just weeks before the primary election, rather than upholding his oath of office by being fair and impartial. Loudoun voters have lost trust in the one office in which trust is absolutely required.”
