Good Shepherd moves to Ashburn

After a long, tumultuous year of getting the community on board with its plans to move its thrift store and administrative offices to Ashburn, Good Shepherd Alliance moved into its new building at 20684 Ashburn Road on June 28.

Originally the plans also called for a drop-in center for the homeless population the nonprofit serves, but after a huge outcry from neighboring residents, GSA took the drop-in center out of the plans.

The 7,000-square-foot facility, which opened earlier this week, will house a thrift store on the bottom floor and offices and counseling services on the top floor. GSA combined its Sterling thrift store and Leesburg administration facilities into one location to save on rental fees.

The county government has taken over the Leesburg facility at 37 Sycolin Road S.E., and after a week of renovation (painting and new carpeting) that site will reopen as a drop-in center where homeless people can shower, wash laundry and eat.

County Department of Family Services and Mental Health Services staff will be on location at the Leesburg site. That facility will be open 20 hours a week with the schedule still to be determined, based on client needs, according to Robert Chirles, director of the Department of Family Services.
