Purcellville

Big celebration, a swearing in, a government grant and a top scholar

By Marge Kraft

Big celebration: The Town of Purcellville, Olympus Gym and other proud sponsors would like to invite you to our Independence Day celebration and parade called the Pride of Purcellville. This event will be held July 4 at Loudoun Valley High School. The rides and booths will be open 1-6 p.m. There will be rides, entertainment and wonderful food. Parking will be at the IGA Plaza (Purcellville Marketplace location).

The annual Fourth of July parade starts at noon at Emerick Elementary and ends at Loudoun Valley High School. Fireworks will be at Franklin Park to top off the event.

This will be a fun-filled family celebration, and we hope that you will spread the word to your friends and family and invite them to join you and your neighbors. The proceeds from this event will go to the Purcellville Volunteer Fire Department, Purcellville Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Centennial Committee and other local charities. Please check out the Web site for more information about the times and activities as well as a list of sponsors.

If you would like to register for the parade, please e-mail Donnie Embrey at forestffembrey@aol.com. For more information about becoming a sponsor or a vendor, please contact Magic Kayhan at 540-751-1050 or refer to the Web site at www.prideofpurcellville.org. Any other questions can be directed to Cheryl Herman at 540-751-2326.

Thank you and hope to see you.

A swearing in: The Honorable Gary Clemens, clerk of the circuit court, had a swearing-in ceremony Wednesday, June 25, at Purcellville's Town Hall for the council members who took their seats effective July 1.

The following individuals were sworn in: Mayor Robert W. Lazaro Jr. and council members Gregory W. Wagner, Christopher J. Walker III and Joan Lehr.

For more information on this, please contact Jen Herman at 540-751-2326.

Government grant: The Town of Purcellville was notified recently that it has received a local government challenge grant for FY 2008-2009. This grant is issued by the Virginia Department for the Arts, and the program is partially sponsored by the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. The grant will allow the town to allocate $10,000 towards cultural and art-related programs during the next fiscal year.

Patrick Childs: Patrick Childs, assistant town manager, was excited to receive the Chuck Church Scholarship Award at the Virginia Local Government Management Association's Summer Conference. Congratulations, Patrick. For more information, contact the Town of Purcellville at 540-751-2333.
