Upper Loudoun ousts Abingdon to advance
Upper Loudoun American (ULA) defeated Abingdon 11-1 July 20 to advance to the single-elimination round of the 2008 Virginia State Little League baseball tournament for 9- to 10-year-olds.
Purcellville Mayor Bob Lazaro was on hand to throw out the first pitch for a game that took Upper Loudoun just four innings to finish. Tournament rules state that if a team is up by more than 10 runs after the fourth, the game is over.
“In addition to great pitching, we had good sticks out there today,” ULA manager Rick Meyer said.
Upper Loudoun pitcher Cade Kiely tossed a complete game, racking up four strikeouts and surrendering one unearned run on just three hits.
“Winning at this level boils down to defense, throwing strikes, base running and bringing the sticks,” Meyer said.
The biggest stick of all was brought by the big fella, first baseman Trey “T-Bone” Rustand.
In the fourth inning, with Upper Loudoun up 5-1 and one man on base, Rustand stepped up to the plate against Abingdon pitcher Isaac Perrigan.
Two hundred and ten feet later, Upper Loudoun found itself up 7-1 as Rustand served up a two-run homer that soared over the center field wall.
ULA tacked on four more runs and the game was called after the score hit 11-1.
Upper Loudoun finished its pool play with a perfect 3-0 record and will now enter the single elimination round which lasts from July 21 through to the championship game July 23.
This is just the second Upper Loudoun team to ever make it out of pool play. It will face Alexandria July 21 at 7 p.m.
