Burt to volley at NSU
Broad Run High School rising senior Kristen Burt has verbally committed to play Division 1 volleyball at Norfolk State University on an athletic scholarship. Burt will sign her letter of intent in November.
Burt, an All-Dulles District setter each of the last two seasons, made her decision after visiting the NSU campus with her parents, Clinton and Darlene. Norfolk State is coached by Jennifer Fry and is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Burt also plays club volleyball for Metro American, coached by former All-American setter Silvia Johnson.
Ballard loses title
Former Leesburg resident Perry “The Punisher” Ballard unsuccessfully defended his World Boxing Empire light middleweight title against the infamous Hector “Macho” Camacho July 18 at Reliant Stadium in Houston.
The fight was scheduled to go 12 rounds, but Ballard's corner threw in the towel after the seventh round.
Ballard told the Houston Chronicle that Camacho was “the dirtiest fighter I've ever seen in my life.”
Ballard, who suffered a broken jaw in the match, plans to file an appeal with the Texas Athletic Commission to get the decision of the fight changed to a no-contest.
Knights earn top seed
The Knights of Leesburg Post 181 played a perfect weekend by routing Manassas Post 158 14-1 on July 18 and defeating Front Royal Post 53 10-4 on July 19.
The Knights boast a 17-1 overall record and are 15-0 in District 16. They will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming district tournament that begins July 25 at Fireman's Field in Purcellville.
Cottom is an All-Star
Loudoun County High School's Rick Cottom was selected as an All-Star in the Keystone State Invitational Basketball Camp held recently at Slippery Rock University in Williamsport, Pa. Cottom is rising senior forward for the Raiders.
Tennis tourney
The Fauquier County Tennis Championships will be July 28 through Aug. 24 at Chestnut Forks Athletic Club in Warrenton.
Members of the Middleburg Tennis Association and the Ida Lee Recreation Center are eligible to compete. Call 540-347-0823 for more information.
