Upper Loudoun falls out of state tourney

Upper Loudoun American fell 5-2 to the Alexandria All-Stars on July 21 in the first round of the single-elimination portion of the 2008 Virginia State Little League baseball tournament for 9- to 10-year-olds.

Upper Loudoun had gone undefeated (3-0) in tournament pool play but couldn't get in a groove against Alexandria.

"We hit the ball hard, they just played great defense," Upper Loudoun manager Rick Meyer said.

Alexandria drew first blood, scoring runs in the first and second inning. Alexandria remained in the lead until the top of the fifth inning when Upper Loudoun produced two runs of its own to tie the game 2-2.

Alexandria's artillery came through in the bottom of the fifth inning as the team managed three runs to take a 5-2 lead that it would not relinquish.

Alexandria pitcher Hughes Page threw a complete game and gave up only three
hits and two earned runs in the victory. Upper Loudoun pitcher Adam Patterson went the distance as well, surrendering five earned runs on six hits in the loss.

This is only the second Upper Loudoun Little League team to make it out of pool play in the state tournament.

"The way they came together as a team impressed me most. All of these guys really didn't know each other when we first started," said Meyer, who also was impressed by his team's character, noting "a lot of them would lift each other up during and after the games."
