Kaine recognizes Private College Week
Gov. Tim Kaine has issued a proclamation recognizing July 28 to Aug. 2 as this year's "Private College Week."
Rising juniors and seniors in high school and their families are invited to participate in the week, sponsored by the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia (CICV).
Students may choose to visit any of the 24 participating private colleges in Virginia.
The participating colleges are:
Averett University , Danville;
Bluefield College , Bluefield;
Bridgewater College , Bridgewater;
Eastern Mennonite University , Harrisonburg;
Emory & Henry College , Emory;
Ferrum College , Ferrum;
Hampden-Sydney , Hampden-Sydney;
Hampton University , Hampton;
Hollins University , Roanoke;
Jefferson College of Health Sciences , Roanoke;
Lynchburg College , Lynchburg;
Mary Baldwin College , Staunton;
Marymount University , Arlington;
Randolph College , Lynchburg;
Randolph-Macon College , Ashland;
Roanoke College , Salem;
Saint Paul's College , Lawrenceville;
Shenandoah University , Winchester;
Sweet Briar College , Amherst;
University of Richmond , Richmond;
Virginia Intermont College , Bristol;
Virginia Union University , Richmond;
Virginia Wesleyan College , Norfolk/VA Beach;
Washington and Lee University , Lexington
Those who visit at least three colleges during the week will receive three application fee waivers.
Students may use these waivers to apply to any three CIVC colleges for free.
Last year, private colleges in Virginia gave students more than $200 million in scholarships and grants. In-state students attending a private college are also eligible for the Tuition Assistance Grant, which will be approximately $3,200 next year.
During Private College Week, colleges may offer a campus tour and information sessions about things like admisisons, financial aid and academic programs.
Sessions at most schools will begin at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2. This may vary and should be confirmed at www.privatecollegeweek.org.
Students must arrange their own transportation. Students are also encouraged to call beforehand and make an appointment.
