Hillsboro

Wildlife changes, Arts Center changes, voter registration, Old Stone School donations, music jam, dinner theater, hospital sale, birthdays

By Sue Ulland

Wildlife changes: Gone are the pheasants we used to see. Gone is the albino deer which once took shelter in our woods. And for decades our ears no longer heard the sound of the bobwhite quail. Recently, however, he has returned and frequently calls from the fenceline to his mate. What a joyous sound we thought we would never hear again.

Changing of the Guard: The Round Hill Arts Center has a new executive director, Frank Naylor, and a new program director, Hillsboro’s own Meredith Bean McMath. We wish them all the best in guiding the center forward. A huge thank you to the former artistic director, Hope Hanes, who leaves the RHAC after eight years to pursue a career in teaching art. Credit must be given to Hope, who has brought the RHAC to the status it now enjoys.

Art Show: The Round Hill Arts Center presents a unique exhibit, “A Little Art Show,” featured at the center’s gallery through August. The show features 69 pieces from 22 artists in a variety of media. The small (all are 12 by 12 inches or less) and affordable works include miniature oils, collage, fused glass, nature photography and more. The gallery is open Wednesday-Friday, 10 a.m. 5 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. It is at 6 W. Loudoun St. in the center of Round Hill. The public is invited to meet the artists at the center at a reception Saturday, Aug. 2, 4-6 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Questions? Visit www.roundhillartscenter.org or call 540-338-5050.

Registration deadline: The presidential campaign is heating up, and it is time to think about voting in the Nov. 4 election. If you are not already registered in Loudoun County, the deadline to register to vote in this election is Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. Extended hours for absentee voting begin Oct. 20. Saturday absentee voting takes place Oct. 20 and Nov. 1. Mark your calendars now so your vote will count. Additionally, the Loudoun County Electoral Board is seeking election officers. This is a compensated position. If you are interested, e-mail elections@loudoun.gov or call 703-777-0548 to find out where to register near you.

Old Stone School Fund: Those wishing to donate online via Paypal account or by check to the restoration of the OSS following the recent fire can do so on the HCA Web site www.hillsborova.org. Restoration work is well under way.

Bluegrass and Folk Jam: The monthly bluegrass and folk jam session at the Round Hill Arts Center takes place Friday, July 25. Doors open at 6 p.m. Due to fire regulations, the “pickin’” will take place outside in the back parking lot and on the front porch. Beverages and food will be served inside. Parking is available across the street in the church parking lot.

Aurora Studio Theatre: Aurora Studio Theatre at Grandale Farm Restaurant is proud to present “The Art of Dining,” a delightful comedy of dinner manners directed by Ike Stoneberger. Written by award-winning playwright Tina Howe, the play contains mature themes and language and is not recommended for children. The comedy will be presented Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, Aug. 1-17. Fridays and Saturdays, dinner is at 6 p.m. and the show at 7 p.m., and Sundays, dinner is at 1 p.m. and the show is at 2 p.m. Tickets are $65 and are available now by calling 540-668-6000. The cost includes tax and gratuity but not alcohol. Aurora’s first dinner theater production sold out two weeks in advance, so it is recommended that tickets be purchased early.

Family Night Movies: Fireman’s Field in Purcellville will be the venue for Family Movie Night Friday, Aug. 15. “Ratatouille” will be shown. This is a family-oriented, free event. Bring a blanket or chairs and enjoy the show.

The Ladies Board of Inova Loudoun Hospital continues to seek donations for its 70th annual rummage sale scheduled for Oct. 17-18 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days) at the Morven Park Equestrian Center just north of Leesburg off U.S. 15 N. All proceeds benefit the hospital. To donate, call 703-771-2985 and leave a message. A member will return your call and set up a convenient time and place to meet. Help The Ladies Board celebrates 70 years of giving to the community by donating your usable items to its rummage sale. Something new has been added this year. For the usual sale hours, no admission will be charged, but those opting for ticketed early admission (ie. 8 to 9 a.m.) will be charged a $5 fee.

Sympathy: Heartfelt sympathy is extended to the family and friends of longtime Hillsboro resident Shirley Tabor who died July 22 at her home with family at her side. Please keep children Fred and Sarah and the extended Tabor family in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Further details were not available at this writing.

Do remember: Please remember those in nursing homes, those confined to their homes and those in assisted living -- Betty Creamer, Mary Lee Dailey, Betty Fleming, Kay Copeland, Wilma Helton, Nancy Miller, Lawrence Thompson and Terry Thompson. Cards, calls and visits are always appreciated. Additionally, Terry Jones, Judi Legard, Mabel Rodgers and Bev Walker are recovering and healing.

Enjoy your special days. Those wishing to submit birthday announcements should do so at least two weeks in advance by either e-mailing BUlland123@aol.com or calling 540-668-6331.
