Holiday Coalition, craft fair, Loudoun Lyric Opera, home-delivered meals
By Jeanette Gandhi
Holiday Coalition: The Loudoun Holiday Coalition is gearing up to make the holidays a little brighter for Loudoun's less fortunate individuals and families. There are many ways that you can help by donating time, money and/or materials. The Coalition will have a "November store" and will be accepting donations for that Nov. 16-22. Items needed include nonperishable food items, personal, toiletry and household items and food gift cards in $10 increments. Drop-off locations are located at the Cascades Public Library, Ashburn's Guardian Storage on Waxpool Road, Integrated Sports Medicine and Therapy in Lansdowne, the South Riding Town Hall (weekdays 9 a.m.-5 p.m.). To view a complete list or for more information, visit www.loudoun.gov/holidaycoalition. If you'd like to volunteer, e-mail holidayvolunteers@loudoun.gov.
Craft fair: Ashburn Farm will be hosting its second annual craft fair Nov. 15, 9 a.m. -1 p.m., at the Windmill Community Center. Dozens of local crafters will be displaying and selling jewelry, weaving, baskets, quilts, wreaths, painting, furniture, purses, handmade cards, photographs and more. Admission is free.
Loudoun Lyric Opera: Miss Virginia 2006, Adrianna Sgarlata, has joined the cast of Loudoun Lyric Opera for its upcoming performance of Puccini's “Gianni Schicchi.” She will sing the lead soprano part of Lauretta with the company. She previously performed this role while a student at George Mason University and at the Amalfi Coast Opera Festival in Italy this summer.
Performances are Nov. 14-15 at 8 p.m. at St. David's Episcopal Church, 43600 Russell Branch Parkway. A Sunday matinee will take place at 3 p.m. on Nov. 16 at the Carver Center, 200 Willie Palmer Way, Purcellville. General admission tickets are $25 and may be ordered online at www.loudounlyricopera.com. For more information, call 703-771-0996 or e-mail admin@loudounlyricopera.com.
Home-delivered meals: The Loudoun County Home Delivered Meal (HDM) Program needs substitute volunteer drivers to assist during the upcoming holiday season for three Ashburn routes.
Volunteers may sign up for one hour a week or month, or more, to deliver a hot, weekly nutritious, noontime meal 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in November, December and January. Meals are prepared, packaged and delivered to one central Ashburn Village location for delivery to homebound older or disabled adults.
This is a great opportunity for parents, couples and families to share in the gift of service together and help those in need right here in our own Ashburn community. HDM volunteers provide more than just a daily meal to older residents; they provide kindness, friendship and a sense of community.
For more information, contact Debra Bressler at 703-777-0257 or e-mail debra.bressler@loudoun.gov for a volunteer application.
