CountrySide/Cascades

New voters, chili, Halloween winners, quilts, fundraisers and books

By Kathie Felix

New voters: If you were a first-time voter on Nov. 4 at CountrySide Elementary or the Claude Moore Recreation Center, you probably received a rousing round of applause. It was a spontaneous expression of encouragement; the CountrySide poll workers were very surprised to learn that the Claude Moore crowd was doing the same thing. The scene was more somber over at Riverbend Middle School. First-time voters Mike Reiss and Yelena Nazaroff went through the process unnoticed, even though at least one mom tried to point them out for a little recognition.

VeriChili: Halloween Eve found 285 VeriSign employees gathered in Dulles for the VeriSign Charity Chili Cook-off. The event featured 26 chili entries and 12 carved pumpkins, including the well-named “VeriScary.” The festivities also included a tricycle fun race showcasing VeriSign executives. The cook-off rounded up a $1,300 donation for the Loudoun Coalition.

Very festive: The winners of the CountrySide Halloween House Decorating Contest are 15 Brookmeade Court (Oatlands), 5 West Court (Rokeby), 34 Dulany Court (Welbourne), 5 Teasdale Court (Morven), 10 Westmoreland Drive (Belmont), 7 Stafford Court (Oakridge) and 48 Dorrell Court (Foxfield).

Habitat quilt: Tickets for the CountrySide Quilters’ Habitat for Humanity fundraising quilt are available at the quilters’ meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. The price is $3 for a single ticket or $5 for two tickets.

Hospital fundraisers: The CountrySide Women’s Club holds a general meeting Nov. 14 at the Parkway Pool meeting room. Joyce Biesecker, president of the Loudoun Hospital Ladies Board, and Kathleen Beaver, chairwoman of the Loudoun Hospital Thrift Shop, will discuss their fund-raising work and the outreach projects supported by their efforts. The coffee and social time begin at 9:30 a.m. The general meeting begins at 10 a.m.

Bookish: The Cascades Women’s Book Club meets Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Delia’s CountrySide restaurant. Club members are bringing their favorite books to “show and tell” to the group. New and prospective members are encouraged to attend. Call 703-421-1060.

Capital Quilts: The CountrySide Quilters meet Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Lutheran Church in Cascades. Susan and Gary McLaughlin, owners of Capital Quilts in Gaithersburg, will talk about the latest news from the Houston quilt show. Bring a nonperishable food donation for the church’s LINK pantry. Call 703-450-2139.
