Dedication held for new site of Aurora School
The Aurora School in Purcellville, founded in 2003 by the Arc of Loudoun (Larc) as a school for children with autism and special needs, is moving to a new campus in Leesburg.
The new Arc of Loudoun facility at the old Paxton Child Development Center in the northeast of town will house the school and all of Larc's operations. It is targeted for a fall 2009 opening date.
A dedication for the site held Oct. 8 included unveiling of the new name of the facility, the Margaret Paxton Memorial Learning and Resource Campus, said Steve Wolfson of Larc.
The Paxton estate will offer 11,000 square feet for the school – up from 4,000 square feet -- allowing the number of students to more than double from the current 24.
"We are out of space. We're literally on top of each other in Purcellville," Wolfson said. "The new campus is a facility dedicated to helping needy children. That is exactly parallel to our mission."
The new facility will add preschool and day care for children of all abilities, plus an after-school program for children with significant disabilities.
Larc is navigating the county's planning process to earn a special exception to open the school and day-care facility on residentially zoned land.
