Teacher of the Year

Kristi Lincicome, a government teacher at Loudoun Valley High School, has been voted the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year by the employees of the Leesburg Wal-Mart store.

The Wal-Mart award carries with it a $1,000 prize for Loudoun Valley High School and a $100 gift card with which Lincicome can buy classroom supplies.

Lincicome has taught for 29 years at Loudoun Valley and taught for six years prior to that in Richmond.


Young leader

Mauricio Ayala of Leesburg has been selected as one of 35 participants in the Hispanic Young Professionals event, a four-day leadership development program in Washington, D.C.

The event will take place Oct. 15-18 to teach promising Hispanic college students professional etiquette and leadership skills.

Ayala is a freshman nursing major at the University of Virginia. He qualified for the program because he was selected as a recipient of a 2008 Kaiser Mid-Atlantic Scholarship from the Hispanic College Fund.

The four-day Young Professionals event includes lessons on networking, resume building, interview workshops and office visits to corporations such as IBM and Google.

The program culminates with the Hispanic College Fund's Scholarship Awards Gala Oct. 17.


School receives $2,000

Dominion Power has awarded Dominion Trail Elementary School in Ashburn with $2,000 through its Educational Partnership Program.

Accepting the award was Zachary Wojahn, a sophmore at Broad Run High School who has paired with the elementary school for a special project.

The project will transform a courtyard at the school into an outdoor classroom for students.

With the completion of the project, Wojahn will become an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts.


Tech marching band

Several students from Loudoun County have been accepted into the Marching Virginians at Virginia Tech.

To qualify, students must audition one week before the beginning of classes each fall.

Trident Scholar

Midshipman first class Charles C. Jones of Leesburg has been selected by the Naval Academy as a Trident Scholar for the 2008 – 2009 year.

The Trident Scholar program provides exceptional midshipmen in high academic standing the opportunity to engage in independent study and research in science and technology during their senior year at the Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Jones is a class of 2005 graduate of the Notre Dame Academy.


Merchant Marines

Midshipman Renee Hogan of Sterling has been accepted into the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.


High school scholar

Mark Rossi, a 2007 graduate of Loudoun Country Day School who currently attends Notre Dame Academy has been accepted into the National Society of High School Scholars.
