Police and fire briefs

The following news happened throughout the week in Loudoun's public safety fields:

Man sentenced for real estate investment scheme

A former Middleburg man was sentenced Aug. 29 to seven years in prison for orchestrating a real-estate investment scheme in Northern Virginia and Delaware.

Scott E. Luellen, 35, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Liam O'Grady after pleading guilty to one count of money laundering May 13, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

Court documents state that Luellen was the former managing director of Ideal Ventures LLC and the Virginia Heritage Foundation II. From about September 2004 to November 2007, he convinced about 20 potential investors, including a private equity firm, to invest millions in fraudulent real estate projects, Troxell said.

Specifically, Luellen made material false representations concerning real-estate development projects to induce investors to provide him with funds,” Troxell said.

Through the scheme, Luellen received about $1.7 million from investors, which he used to finance a lavish lifestyle, including living at the Ritz-Carlton in Georgetown, Troxell said.

The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office helped investigate the case.

Free gun safety kits

Free gun safety kits, which include gun locks provided by Project ChildSafe, are available for gun owners to pick up.

The kits are being distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at the three Loudoun County Sheriff's Office facilities, Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

Project ChildSafe gave the Sheriff's Office 100 gun locks for the kits. The kits also include a safety curriculum.

The three facilities where the kits are available are the administration building at 39 Catoctin Circle in Leesburg, the Dulles South Public Safety Center at 25216 Loudoun County Parkway in Chantilly, and the Ashburn substation at 45299 Research Place in Ashburn. The kits can be picked up Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Back-to-school safety

Loudoun County Sheriff's deputies are strictly enforcing traffic safety laws around the county's elementary, middle and high schools.

As part of a back-to-school campaign, the deputies are on hand to ensure the safety of children returning to school, Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

The Sheriff's Office reminds drivers to obey signals by law-enforcement officers and crossing guards, and to watch out for children walking to and from school since they may forget to watch for cars.

The campaign will last through the first few weeks of September.
