Man arrested for sexual assault of elderly woman

A man is in custody for an incident that authorities say could be linked to a series of prowler sightings and assaults around the county, but the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is telling residents to remain vigilant.

Martin Jose Morales-Mancia, 24, of no fixed address, turned himself in Sept. 14 to authorities, said Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell. He was charged in connection with an Aug. 29 case in which a prowler broke into an elderly woman's house on Ironwood Road, brandished a knife and sexually assaulted her.

The Sheriff's Office had told the public Sept. 11 that he was wanted for the crimes and asked for assistance in locating him.

On the night of Sept. 12, deputies canvassed Sterling Park searching for him. During the canvass, they went door-to-door and stopped people at intersections to ask if they had seen the suspect.

We definitely got a number of leads to his whereabouts,” Troxell said, adding that several people said they recognized Morales-Mancia.

Police believe that the canvass and public pressure led Morales-Mancia to turn himself in Sunday evening.

Morales-Mancia was charged with sexual assault by force and burglary with intent to commit a felony, Troxell said.

He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.

When the sexual assault was first reported, investigators said it could be related to a series of prowler incidents that have spanned the last several months in Leesburg and Ashburn Farm.

After the sexual assault, there was a prowler sighting in Sterling Park.

Investigators are still looking into whether Morales-Mancia could be a person of interest in those incidents. However, all of those cases remain open, Troxell said.

Just because an arrest was made doesn't mean [residents] should let their guard down,” Troxell said.

He added that everyone should continue to lock their doors and windows as well as report any suspicious people in their neighborhoods to the Sheriff's Office.

Residents can report suspicious activity by calling 703-777-1021.
