Residents encouraged to start Neighborhood Watch programs

Since October is National Crime Prevention month, the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is encouraging residents to begin Neighborhood Watch programs.

There are already 49 active Neighborhood Watch programs throughout the county, Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

Neighborhood Watch is a program that enlists residents in cooperation with law enforcement to reduce crime, solve neighborhood problems and improve quality of life, Troxell said.

Also in October, the Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention unit will offer burglary prevention classes. The dates, times and locations for those classes are as follows:
  • Oct. 8, 7 p.m., Purcellville

  • Oct. 16, 7 p.m., Dulles South Public Safety Center

  • Oct. 20, 7 p.m., Cascades Library

Other crime prevention campaigns also will be launched this month, including a business watch program and a monthly Neighborhood Watch newsletter, Troxell said.

If you would like to start a Neighborhood Watch program for your community or would like to have a crime prevention specialist teach a class in your area, contact Deputy Spc. Nathan Payne at 703-777-0477 (nathaniel.payne@loudoun.gov) or Deputy Spc. James Spurlock at 703-771-5749 (james.spurlock@loudoun.gov).
